The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), is a nonprofit organization that is owned and managed by its members. With more than 30,000 members around the world, NSBE is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the United States. NSBE’s mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.”
In addition, NSBE has a number of corporate partners and affiliations that facilitate its mission and primary directives, which are essentially engineering excellence and community service. NSBE’s Board of Corporate Affiliates (BCA) are businesses interested in diversity, and include companies like IBM and Dell, all branches of the American Military, Toyota, Intel, Johnson & Johnson, and many other note-worthy industries. With its corporate partners, dedicated students and professionals, NSBE has accomplished more for Black engineering students and working engineers than any other organization in the world.
The NSBE Torch symbolizes the organization’s everlasting, burning desire to achieve success in this competitive society and to effect positive change in the quality of life of all people. The goal of the Society is to replicate its mission and vision in countries around the world, creating a global network of Black engineers, scientists and technologists.
NSBE has established a program that includes students of all ages called the Pre-College Initiative (PCI), which is designed to stimulate the interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, or STEM. The goal is to encourage students in grades K–12 to attend college and pursue technical degrees and provide activities to help students discover firsthand how engineering and technology relate to the world around them and discover the excitement of academic excellence, leadership, technical development and teamwork. These activites include LEGO Mindstorms Robotics, VEX Robotics, Mathcounts, Try-Math-A-Lon, Science Fairs, and more.
